Millicom
Millicom International Cellular S.A. (brand name: Tigo) is a global telecommunications group with mobile operations in 13 emerging markets in Latin America and Africa and cable and broadband businesses in five countries in Central America. The total population in its licensed areas is over 270 million and Millicom currently serves a customer base of close to 45 million people. Millicom International Cellular S.A. was incorporated under Luxembourg law in 1992. In 1993, it listed on the Nasdaq, entering the Nasdaq 100 in 2006. In 2011, the company decided to consolidate its listing in Stockholm on Nasdaq OMX. In 2011, the company generated revenues in excess of USD4.5bn and employed over 8,000 people worldwide. In 2012, the company was one of 15 winners of the G20 Challenge on Inclusive Business Innovation.

In the 1990's Millicom's founder, Jan Stenbeck, chose Luxembourg as the base for his businesses, which were initially developed and funded by the Kinnevik Group, because Luxembourg has an open and business oriented economy. Mr Stenbeck brought with him a number of other businesses beside Millicom including Tele2 AB, which for some time was the owner of Tango, the Luxembourg mobile operator, Metro newspapers, Banque Invik, Transcom, MACH and SEC businesses. Some of these businesses have been sold in the meantime but are still located in Luxembourg.
Since its incorporation, Millicom has enjoyed a successful relationship with the Luxembourg government and has benefitted from Luxembourg's position at the heart of Europe, choosing to locate its headquarters in the Grand-Duchy given its strong transport links and accessibility to the rest of Europe and, importantly, to other continents where Millicom operates its businesses. In May 2012, the company relocated its headquarter from Leudelange to the Station district of Luxembourg city as more space was needed to accommodate the growing number of Tigo people based out of Luxembourg.
Millicom has also been able to draw on the wealth of talent and linguistic skills available in the market and employs these well trained local people within its business. Also the strong education offered in Luxembourg is attractive for the families of Millicom's employees who come from all parts of the world.
